Background of the Study
Chronic illness refers to long-term medical conditions that persist over time, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. These illnesses can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life and often lead to psychological consequences. Patients with chronic illnesses are at increased risk of developing mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress due to the ongoing challenges associated with managing their health (Walker et al., 2023). The psychological effects of chronic illness are often compounded by the physical symptoms and limitations imposed by the disease, leading to a negative cycle of deteriorating mental and physical health.
At University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), chronic illness is commonly treated, and a significant number of patients face mental health challenges as they manage their conditions. However, the specific psychological effects of chronic illness on patients receiving care at UPTH have not been thoroughly investigated. This study will explore how chronic illness affects the mental health of patients at UPTH and examine the psychological burden these individuals carry.
Statement of the Problem
Chronic illness is associated with an increased prevalence of mental health disorders, yet there is limited research on how patients with chronic illnesses at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital experience and cope with the psychological impact of their conditions. This study will investigate the psychological effects of chronic illness on mental health among patients at UPTH.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the psychological effects of chronic illness on patients' mental health at UPTH.
To examine the relationship between chronic illness and the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among patients at UPTH.
To recommend strategies for addressing the psychological needs of chronic illness patients at UPTH.
Research Questions
What are the psychological effects of chronic illness on patients' mental health at UPTH?
How do patients with chronic illness experience and cope with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress?
What strategies can be implemented to better address the psychological needs of chronic illness patients?
Research Hypotheses
Chronic illness has significant psychological effects on patients, including increased levels of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Patients with chronic illnesses experience higher levels of mental distress compared to individuals without chronic illnesses.
Psychological interventions and support improve the mental health outcomes of chronic illness patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients with chronic illnesses receiving care at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported psychological symptoms and the lack of control over confounding variables such as pre-existing mental health conditions.
